Getting to Redbud Creek Farm

Picture
While the Farm's mailing address is Sheridan, we are in fact located a little over 5 miles (North and East) from the Sheridan business district in a fairly rural area of Northeastern LaSalle County. Our road, North 4351 Road runs basically East and West parallel to the Fox River. The Farm is about 5 miles straight South of Sandwich and US 34 and about 3.8 miles mostly North of Newark and IL 71 and almost just across the Fox River from tiny Millington, Illinois. Via North 42nd Road the Farm is about 11 miles East of IL 23 and using a few nearly direct roads is 11 miles Southwest of IL 47 at IL 71. Depending on the Route selected the Farm is approximately 65 miles Southwest of Downtown Chicago.

Both Google Maps and MapQuest recognize Redbud Creek Farm, Sheridan, IL. Some other mapping services do not. Garmin GPS also recognizes Redbud Creek Farm, Sheridan, IL. If there is ever a question use our official address:

From US 34 & Main Street, Sandwich:
Travel 5.3 miles South on Main Street (which becomes E 29th Road). Turn Left (E) on 4351st Road (just before road curves sharply to the right). Proceed 1/3 mile to the Farm Entrance Lane on the Right.
From the East:
The easiest way is travel to US 34 and follow the above directions. Slightly more direct and scenic is IL 71 which splits off of US 34 in Oswego and follows a more Southwest course. From IL 47 take IL 71 about 6 miles SW. Turn Right (N) at Millbrook Road, then immediately Left (W) onto Walker Road. When Walker ends, turn Left (SW) onto Fox River Road. Follow curving road approximately 2 miles into small town of Millington. At the stop sign, Turn Right (N) (onto Bridge Street also called Millington Road), proceed across the Fox River then about ¼ mile. Turn Left (W) at N 4351st Road (second Left past the bridge). Proceed about ¾ mile to Farm Entrance Lane on Left.

Other useful routes from the east include IL 126 which joins IL 71 about a mile East of IL 47. Other popular routes include US 52 and I-80. When using I-80 from the East we recommend leaving the interstate at the Minooka Exit to avoid traveling out the way to the South. From the Exit, Turn Right (N) on Ridge Road and proceed approx 4 miles to US 52 and Turn Left (W). Follow US 52 approx 8 miles until it intersects with IL 47, then Turn Right (N) and travel approx 2 miles to Newark Road. (While one could continue on US 52, it jogs out of the way to the South.) From IL 47 Turn Left (W) onto Newark Road and travel 7 miles to IL 71. Cross IL 71 into the town of Newark and continue on what is now called Main Street about 10 blocks to Johnson Street and Turn Right (N), then proceed about 2 miles to Millington. The Road now called Church ends at Race Street. Turn Right (E) and travel to T intersection (with Bridge Street). Turn Left (N) and cross the Fox River then proceed about ¼ mile. Turn Left (W) at N 4351st Road (second Left past the bridge) and travel about ¾ mile to Farm Entrance Lane on Left.

From the Southeast:
From Morris and vicinity our route of choice beginning at I-80 and IL 47 is as follows. Travel a short distance North on IL 47 to Nelson Road. Turn Left (W) on Nelson and proceed 1.7 miles to Lisbon Road. Turn Right (NW) and go about 2-1/2 miles to 5-way intersection at Minooka Road. Turn Left (W) and travel 2.8 miles to Townhouse Road and Turn Right (N). After about 3 miles Townhouse Road will Jog Left (W) at US 52. After the jog travel about 4 miles NW to the town of Newark where the Road will become Benton Street and continue as it makes a Right Turn (N) and becomes East Street. Take East Street a few blocks, cross IL 71, then about a block to Taylor Street. Turn Left (W) and travel about 4 blocks to Johnson Street, then Turn Right (N), and proceed about 2 miles to Millington.
From the South:
There are several routes from the South almost all of which involve travel on N 42nd Road, N 4251st Road and N 4351st Road which many folks find confusing so it is described here in detail. We recommend the route up IL 23 as easy and scenic though it may be a couple of miles longer than some other variations. From Ottawa and vicinity travel North on IL 23 approximately 12 miles to N 42nd Road and Turn Right (E). The Farm is located approximately 11 miles straight East though the road has some unique quirks. Travel is nearly straight for the first 7 miles and then N 42nd Road curves and descends markedly approaching the cutoff for Sheridan where there is a stop sign. After the stop sign the road climbs back above the Fox River and becomes N 4251st Road. After about 2.5 miles of travel from the stop sign the road sharply curves left (that is to the North and becomes E 2750th Road). Immediately after the curve Turn Right (E) on what is now N 4351st Road and continue traveling East. In another 1.5 miles the road again curves sharply to the left (that is to the North and becomes E 29th Road which eventually turns into Main Street, Sandwich). Immediately after the curve Turn Right (E) and continue traveling about 1/3 mile to the Farm Entrance Lane on the Right (S) side of the road.

Another major route from the South is IL 71. We prefer to follow IL 71 to the pleasant town of Newark which straddles the highway about 7.5 miles Northeast of Norway. Recently Johnson Street was extended to IL 71 making travel through Newark very straightforward. Look for a Blue Illinois Tourist Destination Sign calling attention to the Fern Dell Museum at Johnson Street. Turn Left (N) at Johnson Street and proceed about 2 miles to Millington.

An alternate route from IL 71 by Norway (which we think can be confusing) is to Turn Left (N) onto E 2603rd Road, also called LaSalle County 3, and travel North about 4.5 miles to Robinson Street in the town of Sheridan. Continue traveling straight North through Sheridan, then across the Fox River to the T intersection with N 42nd / N 4251st Road. Turn Right (E) and follow the directions printed at the beginning of this section (or just below) for this sometimes confusing stretch of road.

Picture
From the West:
Immediately West the most direct route is North 42nd Road which morphs into N 4251st and then N 4351st Road from which the Farm Entrance Lane is actually accessed. As discussed above, the road has some unique intersections which make the last few miles of travel to the Farm slightly confusing. From the stop sign at N 42nd Road and the cutoff to the bridge leading to Sheridan by the entrance to the Western Sand & Gravel/LaFarge Plant, the road goes steadily uphill and becomes N 4251st Road. After about 2.5 miles of travel from the stop sign the road sharply curves left (to the North and becomes E 2750th Road). Immediately after the curve Turn Right (E) onto what is now N 4351st Road and continue traveling East. In another 1.5 miles the road again curves sharply to the left (to the North and becomes E 29th Road which eventually turns into Main Street, Sandwich). Immediately after the curve Turn Right (E) and continue traveling about 1/3 mile to the Farm Entrance Lane on the Right (S) side of the road.

From further South, I-80 and US 52 are major routes from the West. We recommend exiting I-80 at IL 23 North in Ottawa and following the directions printed in the above section. Another good option from I-80 is to exit at Utica and take E 8th Road North to US 52. Turn Right (E) and travel on US 52 until it junctions with IL 23 and then proceed North as directed above or follow US 52 approximately 5 miles East of IL 23 and then Turn Left (N) at E 2351st Road (Hoxsey). Proceed NNE approximately 4 miles and Turn Right (E) on N 42nd Road and note directions for N 42nd Road just above. From most places West and Northwest the easiest and most direct way is to get to US 34 and Main Street, Sandwich and follow those directions printed above.

From the North:
The historic town of Sandwich with its famous county fair and often-used fair grounds is located 5 miles North of the Farm. From the Fairgrounds Turn Left (E) on Center Street and travel the mile or so to Main Street. Turn Right (S), cross the Railway tracks. From the stoplight at US 34 travel a little over 5 miles to N 4351st Road (just before a sharp curve to the right) and Turn Left (E). Travel about a third of a mile to the Farm Entrance Lane on the Right (S).

An excellent and obvious main route is IL 23. Take it south to US 34 and Turn Left (ENE) and travel to Main Street Sandwich and follow above directions. A slightly more direct route is Somonauk Road which actually runs all the way from Sycamore to past the West edge of Sandwich. Somonauk Road is easily accessed via another main East-West Route, US 30, on the Western edge of Hinckley. From US 30 take Somonauk Road South. After about 7.8 miles Turn Left (E) at Suydam Road which eventually becomes Center Street, travels past the Fair Grounds into downtown Sandwich and a stop sign at Main Street. Turn Right (S) and follow the directions immediately above.

Another good route from the East side of Hinckley and US 30 to the East Side of Sandwich is the well named East Sandwich Road. From US 30 in Hinckley travel about 9 miles to US 34 in Sandwich. Turn Right (W) at US 34 and travel a short distance to the traffic light at Main Street and Turn Left (S) and follow the directions printed above.

Other main North-South routes would include IL 47 to the East and I-39 to the West. Both can be useful for long distance travel to the Farm. Use them in conjunction with US 30 or US 34. I-39 works smoothly with US52 (see From the West) and with I-88 to IL 23. IL 47 works very well with IL 71 as described in From the East above.
